At Westfield Farm we have a pedgree herd of Sussex cattle "The Orchardene Herd".
Sussex cattle are a large beef breed, bred for the conditions here in the south east of England.
They have a lovely temperment and are good mums to their calves which we keep for breeding or for direct sales.
It is said that the Sussex bullock will fatten on nothing. Well we give them a bit more that that, but only rarely will they eat anything other than grass and our own hay.
The photos on this page are both of a steer called "Barley" who really "finished" well, and produced many boxes of excellent beef.
Sussex beef has surely got to be one of the treats of the land.
It is succulent and well marbled and as well as the normal steaks and joints, we encourage you to try some of the lesser cuts including brisket cooked slowly with other local vegetables.
Beef is available in freezer boxes, each with a mix of cuts and mince etc.
